Calgary is the fourth biggest city in Canada and biggest city in the province of Alberta, with a population of slightly over 1 million people. Oil was discovered in Alberta at the turn of the century and by mid century it became a thriving industry. As a result of the mid east oil embargo in the early 70's, Calgary really started booming with it's population quadrupling in the next 20 years. The once low-rise skyline transformed into a metropolis of triple A class skyscrapers at a rate almost unrivaled anywhere in the world. With unprecedented growth, the city is now truly prosperous and now has many strong industries outside of the oil and gas business. Downtown Calgary consists of five neighbourhoods including Eau Claire and the Festival District, the West End, the downtown East Village including the river district, the financial core and Chinatown. On the periphery of the downtown core is the thriving Beltline district.
